Its the Bug! It belongs to my grandmothers brother, who takes care of it like if it was his child. He doesen't drive it when its raining, at night, or parks it in crowded areas. I really hope I inherit this car that has been in the family for so long, and that has been taken care of so much. It will be in the best hands.

You must inherit it. I have never seen a bug in that color.

He would be seriously offended by that. But he knows I love it, so I have a chance of inheritance.

That thing is gorgeous....

Down my street there's a guy restoring a '73 super bug (i think). It's yellow, taken apart and i think may be ready to be put back together. It's been like that for a while I think. I told him that I'd love to help out putting it back together :)

Nice! The same guy who is rebuilding the super bug also built a drag racer, like physically welded the tubular frame and everything. He has a modified beetle engine powering it. It's simply amazing...

I think it's cause this is Michigan, and I'm out in the country. People have a lot of space to put their stuff. Especially older cars that they have room to keep. I know this is fact cause there are so many cars shows here! There's one at the Catholic Church nearby that ive been meaning to go to, every Thursday. Work keeps getting in the way..... :(

That fantastic! Here we do not have much auto shows. The only one is where all the brands bring their cars and show them off.

Oh it is. I'm new to the car culture, maybe by 2 years. Jalopnik has definitely emerged me deeper into it. Anyways I'm always learning new things.

When I lived with my in-law, in the middle of nowhere, I went to the auto show downtown, it was quaint, but cool. It was the first time I saw, or heard about, (I believe) a '70 ford fairlane. It was a fastback, was a slightly decayed white color, with a bunch of trimming taken off. It was gorgeous, I couldn't walk away from it. My wife sorta had to beg me to go because the little one was getting noisy . I later found out the fairlane turned into the Torino, which I thought was very appropriate.

Whereabouts are you at?

Haha I am in Mexico. In a small town in the State of Tamaulipas called Tampico. We are about 5 hours drive from the U.S, and live alongside a wonderfull beach.

And also Jalopnik made me know even more things car related I had no idea about.

Same here. And ah Mexico! I've been wanting to visit there! The culture down there, at least how it's represented up here in the states, seems fascinating. Like Dia de Muerto!

Sorry if I come off as a weird tourist-like person or something. I've grown up in the states, and the culture here is a bit bland, at least to me. You see hint and glimpses of other cultures from another country, but nothing substantial. So the culture of Mexico really interests me because, well, because it's so different from what I've grown up with. I mean, a day to honor your dead, sugar skulls, how could I not be curious?

Hahah, Oh yes, every teacher that comes to work a our school from the US or Canada loves the culture. We do have a lot of the things they say, but not as exagerated as they protray them. For example, me and my family really dont celebrate Dia De Muertos like people from smaller towns. We have gotten used to a bit of American life, but dig deep and the culture is right there. I think anyone that comes would fall in love with everything.

So not everyone celebrates Dia De Muerto? Interesting, I didn't know that....but it does makes sense. Not everyone here celebrates every holiday.

I'm curious, and please don't mind me asking, but I know up here a lot of people equate hot sauce and/or salsa with Mexican cuisine. Now I know it's a food down there, but I'm pretty sure its not a staple of your diet, correct? (it could be, I don't know). Sorry, I've never had a chance to sit down (metaphorically) and talk with someone who is in Mexico. This is just really cool for me :).

Kinja'd!!!0

Haha we can talk about Mexico all you want. Yes, Salsa IS part of most Mexicans diets. We dont have to ABSOLUTLEY have it, like ketchup for the Americans, but a lot of people got used to eating everything with it. There are some states that eat more of it (Down south) than we do in the north. I for one, dont really eat stuff with salsa, since it takes the flavour out of the food, and I am a food purist.

Kinja'd!!! zeontestpilot > Vicente Esteve
06/17/2014 at 12:11

Kinja'd!!!0

Thats what I figured. And ketchup is disgusting, I prefer mustard :). And for me, the really spicy salsa's tend not to have a flavor to them, so there's no 'zest' to it. I actually find a generic salsa up here, Casa Mamito (sp?) ....umm, little mama's house, and the medium level is just enough kick while letting you enjoy the flavor of it as well.

So there are states in Mexico? I'm guessing they're similar to the state's of the US? Sort of like territories, right?

Wait, VW Beetle + Mexico..... didn't the last beetle made roll off in Mexico? Production ended in 2002, so there must be a lot of beetles down there then, right?

Kinja'd!!! Vicente Esteve > zeontestpilot
06/17/2014 at 12:32

Kinja'd!!!0

Yes, I don't like salsa, but people here only put as much as to let the food get a zesty flavor.

Yep,we have 31 states here and the federal district, or whatever that is. The state where I live is in the north, border of US, called Tamaulipas.

[looks Tamaulipas up on google maps], that's a pretty big area! So, Michigan is know for it's automobiles, the Upper Peninsula (aka, God's country), etc; what is Tamaulipas known for?

So the most American food I can personally think of is hamburgers and hot dogs. What would be the Mexican equivalent of this? (please don't say tacos...well it can be tacos but I know that's not the only food down there....)

Kinja'd!!! Vicente Esteve > zeontestpilot

We are widely known for seafood around where I live. Jaibas they are called, or sort of crabs you can prepare in a number of delicious ways. Tamaulipas is the land of the dogs of the water, or the sea otters, I don't know why. The city where I live was pretty important in the older days. It was where the first ever commercial flight in Mexico flew to, the first city in Mexico with an elevator, and lots more.

Haha the food here yes, probably is Tacos as the most popular. But we have thongs called Tortas which is the equivalent of the Mexican burger, filled with meat of various sort, vegetables, etc. We have thousands of combinations of meat with sauces, and a lot of seafood.

Here's a curious question. In America, Mexican music tends to be equated with mariachi music. Now, I love the rich sound and tones of mariachi, its catchy and lively (usually). But I figure there has to be other types of popular music down there; punk, rock, rap, hip hop, etc. So, do people still play mariachi music down there? Like a full band? Or is that something that doesn't happen anymore, or perhaps had never happened in the first place?

There is all kinds of music, even Mexican rap! Yes, mariachi is very symbolic here, but we have all kinds.

That's good to hear! What is the most popular car brand in your state? Or the car you see the most? Up here in Michigan, it's mostly GM, then Ford and Chrysler, then everything else that doesn't fit the category of 'American' cars. (note, I haven't nothing against other car makes, the rest of Michigan is a different story).

Also, what type of transmission is more prevalent?

Kinja'd!!! Vicente Esteve > zeontestpilot
06/17/2014 at 15:39

Kinja'd!!!0

Nissan is VERY popular. You have the 20 year old Sentra called the Tsuru that still sells well. We have the last gen Versa selling well, the new Versa selling well, the new March which is a hatchback version of the new Versa also selling brilliantly.

But, the brand people respect the most is Volkswagen. People adore VWs and treat them as cars that are a tier up any other brand. People trust them, and see them as a lot better performing, and most cars 20 years old are going to be VWs.

The reigning transmission is without a doubt manual, which makes me very happy

Nice! Manuals are hard to find here, they are seemingly a unicorn in of itself. What's the top speed limit in your state? I believe ours is 70. Also, what kind of cars do the police drive?

Kinja'd!!! Vicente Esteve > zeontestpilot
06/17/2014 at 16:12

Haha, we pretty much dont have a speed limit. Yes, the highest number indicated is 70MPH, but we just go as fast as we desire.

These are the police cars

Those police cars, they look so boxy, so basic, so generic....they are awesome!

So, would you say that Mexico is becoming more 'Americanized', or that they are still in touch with their cultural roots? It's a personal opinion type of question really.
